Biography D.M. Cornish

D. M. (David) Cornish, born in 1972, is a fantasy author and illustrator hailing from Adelaide, South Australia. He is best known for his debut book Foundling, which is the first installment of the Monster Blood Tattoo trilogy. Following the success of Foundling, Cornish released the second book, Lamplighter, in May 2008, with plans for a third book in the series in the works.

Cornish’s passion for creating fantastical worlds was ignited at a young age when he saw the first Star Wars movie at the tender age of five. This experience opened his mind to the possibility of alternate realities and sparked his creative imagination. Inspired by the works of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, Cornish was convinced that other worlds existed and that writers held the key to unlocking them.

Before he found his footing in the world of storytelling through written words, Cornish expressed his creativity through drawings, a passion that he indulged in throughout his childhood, teenage years, and into adulthood. His journey in the realm of art and storytelling led him to study illustration at the University of South Australia. It was during his time at university that he began compiling a series of notebooks, filling them with his own world-building ideas and histories of what he affectionately called the Half-Continent.

After years of filling 23 journals with his creations, Cornish’s chance encounter with a children’s publisher in 2003 proved to be the turning point in his career. Encouraged by the publisher, he began transforming his ideas into a story, leading to the development of the Monster Blood Tattoo trilogy. His dedication to his craft led him to dedicate himself entirely to writing, fueled by the support of his publisher and driven by his unstoppable creativity.
